Oddfellows

When you walk past this bar on Forrest Road you will probably not notice the interesting facade of the building, let alone know about the history of this place. Built in 1873, Oddfellows Hall was the gathering point for members of the Oddfellows Order. I understand that these were guilds with members from an odd assortment of trades (rather than all from the same trade), hence the term 'odd fellows'. Oddfellows Hall was a Lodge where they would congregate, with lecture rooms, meeting rooms and domitories.

Many Edinburgh people will remember "Bar Oz", previously located in this building, which was accessed through a narrow passage and laid out over two floors. In 2006, £1.05 million was spent on redesiging and opening up the space, and many of the original features can now be seen again.

I mind this building best when it was a shooge second hand record shop. Fantastic place where i could buy or order anything i knew or had heard of. That was however, erm......30 years ago. Ouch!

I think I remember it being the Hare Krishna temple? That would be equally ouch years ago! I have vague recollections of visiting it once!

I remember when this place was Oddfellows long before Bar Oz, it was such a meat market ! In 1990, it was the only place we could get into with really bad fake ID. If you zoom into the pic and look at the detail you see the faces of the building as I took here - http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/edinburghlove/LookingUpInEdinburgh#5314600839981097794

Ah - a sign of age.

Does nobody still conscious remember Greyfriars Market?

Patchouli/sandalwood incense, 20s'newspapers wrapping "interesting" china, dubious Indian garments, French accordion music...

That's what Oddfellows' Hall was to early 70s students.

I wish I could have bought even some of it, and bottled the scents and the hopes...

How many beautiful shots of Edinburgh! :) I'm glad I've found your site, Dido. I will be back soon to see what’s new! :D Cheers from just outside Glasgow (I moved here from Italy last summer).

Great pictures. Maybe you can help me - do you know anything about the little round brass plaques in the pavement which help tourists find spots to take pictures of Edinburgh?

Thanks

Alan

Anonymous has a lot to say.

I worked in Oddfellows for a while when a student at Napier. Probably 1989-1991 or thereabouts. Memories! Not all of them awful.
